The federal government should be run more like a business. That is what freshman Senator and life-long entrepreneur Mike Braun of Indiana told me about the ongoing partial government shutdown. Here’s more from our interview:

SEN. BRAUN: Look at how many shutdowns we’ve had over the last few years and it looks like it comes to this and then you get things done that’s not regular order. That’s a silly way to get anything done. You never run your business or your state government to the verge or to the brink.

BORIS: Do you support a wall on our southern border?

I support absolute border security and as I campaigned, I said its going to take a wall in places. I think the real value here is Democrats, as recently as a few years ago, wanted a wall wanted to spend $25 billion. Now I think it’s going to be a real litmus test. Do they want to do anything other than the status quo?

The administration is requesting $5.7 billion. The approximate federal spending, this year will be 4.5 trillion. The math turns out to about .11% — about .11% of the total federal spend. So, it’s really just about politics for them.

SEN. BRAUN: It is and all of a sudden, the Democrats get sanctimonious about being concerned about the budget or spending dollars wisely. You know, I don’t think they’ve been part of that real way of thinking through their performance in a long time.

Here’s the bottom line: It is highly irresponsible for congressional Democrats to let their disdain for the president and their insistence on playing partisan politics stand in the way of securing our country. Let’s hope that democrats come to the table soon and end this partial government shutdown.
